Information about botulinum toxin treatments

In botulinum treatments, botulinum toxin is injected into a muscle to temporarily relax its activity. This can help reduce facial wrinkles or relax tight muscles in the head and shoulders for migraine patients.

Botulinum toxin, often referred to as Botox, is a naturally occurring substance that blocks the release of acetylcholine in the muscle and prevents nerve signals from activating the muscle.

The wrinkle-smoothing effect of botulinum was discovered by accident in 1987, when a Canadian ophthalmologist was treating patients with strabismus. Since then, botulinum treatments have also been widely used for aesthetic purposes.

Why are botulinum treatments often referred to as Botox?

Botox was originally the brand name of a specific medical product. Today, several botulinum toxin products exist on the market, including Azzalure, Dysport, Vistabel and Xeomin.

However, the word Botox has become commonly used in everyday language to refer to botulinum toxin treatments in general, even though it is technically a trademark.

In Finland and internationally, the term is widely used in conversation to describe aesthetic botulinum treatments.

Before treatment

Before your first botulinum treatment, we arrange a free consultation where we can discuss your wishes and the goals of the treatment together. If you are interested in medical botulinum treatments, we will also review your current health status and whether botulinum treatment is suitable for your condition.

During the 24 hours before treatment, it is recommended to avoid alcohol and not use blood-thinning medications such as aspirin or anti-inflammatory painkillers. This helps reduce unnecessary redness or bruising after the treatment. These effects are usually only cosmetic and not harmful to your health.

After treatment

You will receive detailed aftercare instructions and ongoing support if you have any questions after the treatment.

After the treatment, you should avoid lying down for one hour, sweating for three hours, and touching or rubbing the treated area for 24 hours. Sauna, hot tubs or cold plunges, and solarium use should be avoided for the next four hours to reduce the risk of bruising caused by heat.

You will not see the result immediately after the treatment, as botulinum toxin begins to take effect over the following days, and the best results are usually visible after 2–3 weeks.

Maintenance

The effects of botulinum treatments are not permanent. The results usually last three to five months, which is a suitable interval for maintenance treatments.

If botulinum treatments are given too frequently, there is a risk that the treatment may become less effective as the body can develop resistance to botulinum toxin.

About two weeks after the first treatment, a follow-up visit can be arranged if the result is not yet as desired. If needed, small additional injections can be added without extra charge.

Before and after

The image shows a natural result after botulinum treatment of the entire forehead. The lines have clearly softened and the forehead appears more relaxed.

About 14 days passed between the before and after photos. The result in this case lasted for approximately five months. Botulinum treatment of the forehead can also be used to help balance the shape of the eyebrows.
